Mary Sheringham of the Dorothy Branch of the Childrens Union (Brothers and Sisters Magazine) made a scrapbook to send to Miss Tillard who would have in turn given it to a child on one of the homes for cripples. The date was Jan 1896.

Miss Blanche Cousins ' a little girl of 5 years who stood alone on the stage, being dressed in white and pink said 'I declare this Bazaar open'. The bazaar was held in St Mark's Sunday School (New Swindon?) in 1896 by the children of the Children's Union to raise funds for the homes for deprived and crippled children. I have also a list of the stalls and stall holders.

April 1897 -Miss L Thackeray, Mapledurham Vicarage, near Reading, will gladly supply a aldy, living in London, with wild flowers each week or fortnight during the spring and summer months. The flowers will be gathered by the village children of Miss Thackeray's C U Branch, and packed securley and freshly by herself. Proceeds to be given to the Childrens Union funds. Misss Thackeray has also White Angora Rabbits for sale. Price 3s per pair; sent by rail 1s extra. Imagine if she was on your tree - what a little gem that would be...

Middleton married Amy Rose Stokoe and they had two known children. In 1891 Middleton was law clerk and in 1901 District Highway surveyor.

Diana Canning Yeo born 1860 in Plymouth, Devon. She was the daughter of Henry Hearder Yeo a Canvas Merchant and Diana Canning.
In 1881 Diana was a teacher and in 1899 she became a 'prize winner' in Girl's Own Annual. Henry and Susan Yeo were her siblings............

Born 1878 Pancras, Middlesex, England Hans (known as Percy) was the son of John Sachs and Charlotte Danks. He collected donations for the 'Home of Rest' and his name was published in 'Boys Own Annual' 31 Oct 1887. On leaving School he became a clerk.
A brother John C Sachs born 1877 also collected for the Home of Rest.

Herman was born January 6, 1882 4 Evershot Rd,Islington, Highbury, London, England. He attended Worthing Grammer School and won a handwriting competition in Boys Own Annual on 22 Sept 1894 at the age of 14.
Herman went to Boston,USA arriving in 1902 then married Lucy B Boardman and then went to Minnesota. The couple had three known children.

Mary Leng died on 22nd January 1862 aged 72. She came from Stockton on Tees.

Last week I treated myself to a very thick volume of the Boys Own Annual 1893-94. What I liked best was the pages of competition winners names that I will be able to add to the 'Little Gems' database........... Most names were from the UK, some educational institutions and the likes and others from overseas.

Setting up a blog is not always as straight forward as we think as we have to give it a lot of thought of what we want to include and who we want to read it. I hope my attempt will be of interest to those who are interested in family history. The aim of my blog is to try to help others find their lost ancestors.

My devotion to family history has led me to collect and preserve any old documents, memorial cards, photographs and old postcards that I have come across over time so that they can saved from being lost forever. I have extracted some of the names and begun to add them to a family tree so that I could research some of their
backgrounds.

I am working on a database which I hope will eventually help those who are looking
for their lost ancestors. The database contains names, dates, places, sources, and further details from sources such as books, certificates, church booklets, gravestones, greeting cards, which I have photographed myself, invoices, letters, memorial cards, old newspapers, postcards, school magazines, various documents, etc.

Have you have lost an ancestor and wondering where to look next. Sometimes we don't
know when an ancestor dies, especially if the name is popular- just knowing they were alive that year means less searching.
